{"id":818,"date":"2012-05-07T07:05:55","date_gmt":"2012-05-07T14:05:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/?p=818"},"modified":"2012-05-03T14:18:01","modified_gmt":"2012-05-03T21:18:01","slug":"own-your-degree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/2012\/05\/07\/own-your-degree\/","title":{"rendered":"own your degree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oh, Yahoo!. \u00a0Just when you think they couldn&#8217;t do anything dumber, they do. \u00a0It turns out that their <a title=\"Yahoo Names PayPal President Scott Thompson CEO\" href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/yahoo-names-paypal-president-scott-thompson-ceo-102009170.html\">newly-minted CEO<\/a>, Scott Thompson, doesn&#8217;t have the degree that he claims to have. \u00a0He said he&#8217;s got a CS degree, when he&#8217;s actually got an accounting degree. \u00a0Yahoo! claims that this is an <a title=\"Yahoo\u2019s Response on CEO\u2019s Computer Science ResumeGate: \u201cInadvertent Error\u201d\" href=\"http:\/\/allthingsd.com\/20120503\/yahoos-response-on-computer-science-resumegate-inadvertent-error\/\">inadvertent error<\/a>, except this so-called &#8220;inadvertent error&#8221; can also be found on his eBay bio from his days leading PayPal.<\/p>\n<p>Own your degree. \u00a0Be proud of it. \u00a0My MS is in technical communication, and I&#8217;m clear about it on both my <a title=\"about Nadyne Richmond\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/about\/\">about page<\/a> here as well as on my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/nadyne\">LinkedIn profile<\/a>. \u00a0I can tell you why I got that degree<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-818-1' id='fnref-818-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(818)'>1<\/a><\/sup>, but the fact of the matter is that it&#8217;s what my degree is. \u00a0In various interviews over the years, I&#8217;ve had to explain why my degree is technical communications instead of HCI or design or computer science or software engineering. \u00a0But that&#8217;s the degree that I got, and I&#8217;ve got to be proud of it. \u00a0There are things that I learned in my degree that are immensely useful, even if I was cranky about taking them at the time. \u00a0A course about how to edit technical content was one of those courses &#8212; given how much I have to write now, as well as edit work from others, this course has long since proven its worth.<\/p>\n<p>There comes a point in your career where your experience and your accomplishments matter much more than your degree. \u00a0So don&#8217;t lie about your degree. \u00a0Own it. \u00a0Be proud of it, and be able to explain how it sets you apart from your competition who have a degree that&#8217;s more traditional to your field.<\/p>\n<div class='footnotes' id='footnotes-818'>\n<div class='footnotedivider'><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li id='fn-818-1'> it&#8217;s where all of the HCI classes were at my uni. <span class='footnotereverse'><a href='#fnref-818-1'>&#8617;<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oh, Yahoo!. \u00a0Just when you think they couldn&#8217;t do anything dumber, they do. \u00a0It turns out that their newly-minted CEO, Scott Thompson, doesn&#8217;t have the degree that he claims to have. \u00a0He said he&#8217;s got a CS degree, when he&#8217;s actually got an accounting degree. \u00a0Yahoo!
