{"id":401,"date":"2011-05-20T11:07:26","date_gmt":"2011-05-20T18:07:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/?p=401"},"modified":"2011-05-20T11:07:26","modified_gmt":"2011-05-20T18:07:26","slug":"do-you-think-this-is-twitter-spam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/20\/do-you-think-this-is-twitter-spam\/","title":{"rendered":"do you think this is Twitter spam?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;d like you guys to weigh in on something. \u00a0A couple of days ago, I was having a conversation on Twitter about Mac personal finance software.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m an old-skool Quicken user. \u00a0I&#8217;ve got more than 15 years of data in Quicken. \u00a0I manage everything in there: chequing and savings, credit cards, mortgage, 401(k)s and IRAs, employee stock grants and purchases<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-401-1' id='fnref-401-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(401)'>1<\/a><\/sup>, even my life insurance. \u00a0When I was a Linux user, I maintained a Windows partition only for Quicken and games. \u00a0When I became a Mac user in 2001, I imported all of my Quicken for Windows data into Quicken for Mac so that I didn&#8217;t have to maintain a whole OS for one app. \u00a0Ever since that switch, I&#8217;ve never been entirely satisfied with Quicken for Mac. \u00a0I&#8217;ve tried several different apps in the intervening years, but haven&#8217;t been able to find an app that fully supported my extensive use<sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-401-2' id='fnref-401-2' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(401)'>2<\/a><\/sup>. \u00a0Even the latest version of Quicken, Quicken Essentials for Mac, doesn&#8217;t meet my needs. \u00a0So I&#8217;m still using Quicken 2007.<\/p>\n<p>I follow <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/atlauren\">Andrew Laurence<\/a> on Twitter, and we had the following exchange on Wednesday:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/atlauren\/status\/70928894408130560\">@atlauren:<\/a> Quicken Essentials, iBank, or MoneyDance? Go!<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/nadyne\/status\/70966080532787200\">@nadyne:<\/a> how hardcore are you? Quicken Essentials sucks if you try to do serious tracking, or if you&#8217;re an existing Quicken for Mac user.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/atlauren\/status\/70968109380538368\">@atlauren:<\/a>Currently Quicken\/Mac\/2007. I basically use it for statement reconcile, transaction dload. Direct Connect\/QFX is important.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/nadyne\/status\/70975249314877440\">@nadyne:<\/a> QEM doesn&#8217;t support QIF downloads, but does support OFX. I use Q07, tried QEM, and went back to Q07 even though it&#8217;s so buggy.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/atlauren\/status\/70975631713775616\">@atlauren:<\/a> Hurm. Most my institutions use OXF\/DirectConnect. One does OXF\/WebConnect. One only does OXF for Quicken\/Win; Mac has to use QIF.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/nadyne\/status\/70977325214334976\">@nadyne:<\/a> The last time I tried iBank and MoneyDance, they didn&#8217;t have enough support for my use. But that might&#8217;ve changed.<\/p>\n<p>The next day, we got the following tweet:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/IGGmarketing\/status\/71201851000881152\">@IGGmarketing:<\/a> Full-featured iBank 4 imports from Quicken, has reports, budgets, iPhone sync, free trial.<\/p>\n<p>This felt like spam to me, so I went and checked out their twitter stream. \u00a0Most of their tweets were identical to that one, with a few that were responses to questions. \u00a0So I responded:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; line-height: 24px; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/nadyne\/status\/71234894956728320\">@nadyne:<\/a> It&#8217;s so full-featured it&#8217;s got spammers and everything! Isn&#8217;t that something to be proud of.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; line-height: 24px; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/atlauren\/status\/71237336444313600\">@atlauren:<\/a> Blocked and reported. sigh.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; line-height: 24px; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/nadyne\/status\/71237796366532608\">@nadyne:<\/a> at least they were kind enough to remove themselves from consideration, I suppose<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; line-height: 24px; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/IGGmarketing\/status\/71283001123799040\">@IGGmarketing:<\/a> Sincere apologies but in doing my job there&#8217;s a big diff between &#8220;spam&#8221; and entering a public discussion via social media.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; line-height: 24px; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/nadyne\/status\/71325463565443072\">@nadyne:<\/a> When you send a form tweet that doesn&#8217;t address the conversation, it&#8217;s spam.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; line-height: 24px; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/IGGmarketing\/status\/71567228818042881\">@IGGmarketing:<\/a> Just sharing relevant info. Granted I lose a certain amount of nuance in 140 characters. But I never disguise my ID, intent or bias.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; line-height: 24px; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/nadyne\/status\/71610430342168577\">@nadyne:<\/a> that&#8217;s the point: your tweet wasn&#8217;t relevant to our conversation, and is the same tweet you use for any mention of Quicken<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif; line-height: 24px; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/nadyne\/status\/71610808005689346\">@nadyne:<\/a> the issue isn&#8217;t a lack of nuance, but rather a lack of consideration<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, what say you? \u00a0Were they spamming, or did I overreact? \u00a0I&#8217;m really curious what y&#8217;all think.<\/p>\n<div class='footnotes' id='footnotes-401'>\n<div class='footnotedivider'><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li id='fn-401-1'> No options, though.
