{"id":343,"date":"2011-03-28T07:40:29","date_gmt":"2011-03-28T14:40:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/?p=343"},"modified":"2011-03-25T20:02:00","modified_gmt":"2011-03-26T03:02:00","slug":"this-is-why-i-tweet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/28\/this-is-why-i-tweet\/","title":{"rendered":"this is why I tweet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was asked recently why I&#8217;m on Twitter. \u00a0It&#8217;s all about serendipity.<\/p>\n<p>The metaphor that I use to describe Twitter is that it&#8217;s a neverending cocktail party that&#8217;s full of people I like. \u00a0Just like a large cocktail party, there&#8217;s lots of different conversations going on at once. \u00a0You can participate in them, or not, as the mood strikes. \u00a0And, just like a cocktail party, the topics of the conversations vary widely. \u00a0There&#8217;s always someone talking politics, there&#8217;s always someone sharing something banal about their life, and there&#8217;s always someone talking shop.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, as at a cocktail party, it&#8217;s okay to leave to go get some fresh air. \u00a0I don&#8217;t think that anyone expects that you&#8217;ll read every single tweet. \u00a0I certainly don&#8217;t expect it, nor do I read everything. \u00a0I ignore Twitter with aplomb and have no guilt whatsoever. \u00a0After I&#8217;ve gotten my fresh air, I can come back into the cocktail party, and it will have continued on just fine without me.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter is great for serendipity. \u00a0I&#8217;ve randomly learned that a friend is nearby, so we&#8217;ve taken advantage of the proximity to grab a coffee and catch up. \u00a0I&#8217;ve helped answer questions that I&#8217;ve noticed, helping someone else out. \u00a0I&#8217;ve had someone find me at a conference to thank me for my assistance. \u00a0It&#8217;s all good.<\/p>\n<p>I had another example of that kind of serendipity late last week. \u00a0One of my <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/ssauer\">VMware colleagues<\/a>, who I haven&#8217;t yet met, tweeted that he was out in the field helping out with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/vcloud-director\/overview.html\">vCloud Director<\/a> installation. \u00a0This is perfect timing: I&#8217;m in the midst of some longitudinal research, and wanted to add a vCloud Director customer to that effort. \u00a0I sent off an email, and received a lightning-fast response from him. \u00a0He&#8217;s happy that someone in the company saw his tweet and reached out to him, I&#8217;m happy that it looks like I&#8217;m going to fill a need (and improve my research too!).<\/p>\n<p>And this, this is why I tweet. \u00a0Yes, I admit, I&#8217;ve tweeted about cats, cocktails, and the coast. \u00a0I&#8217;ve also tweeted about projects I&#8217;m working on, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/company\/news\/releases\/vmworld-end-user.html\">Horizon<\/a>. \u00a0It all comes together in one big tweetstream that represents who I am, and hopefully will continue to create serendipity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was asked recently why I&#8217;m on Twitter. \u00a0It&#8217;s all about serendipity.
