{"id":321,"date":"2011-03-17T07:28:21","date_gmt":"2011-03-17T14:28:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/?p=321"},"modified":"2011-03-15T14:45:42","modified_gmt":"2011-03-15T21:45:42","slug":"my-first-computer-small-black-box-of-computing-desire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/17\/my-first-computer-small-black-box-of-computing-desire\/","title":{"rendered":"my first computer: &#8220;small black box of computing desire&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I remember my first computer. \u00a0It was a Timex-Sinclair 1000 (known as a ZX-81 overseas). \u00a0My dad bought it, and he and I learned about computers and programming together on it.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the BBC called it a <a title=\"ZX81: Small black box of computing desire\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/magazine-12703674\">small black box of computing desire<\/a><sup class='footnote'><a href='#fn-321-1' id='fnref-321-1' onclick='return fdfootnote_show(321)'>1<\/a><\/sup>. \u00a0They observed that it &#8220;created a generation of software developers&#8221;, and I&#8217;m one of them.<\/p>\n<p>I remember storing files on the cassette tape, as well as buying Frogger on cassette to play it on the computer. \u00a0There was the RAM pack that you had to put on the back of it to do anything beyond the 1-KB of onboard memory, which didn&#8217;t have a great connector and thus would fall off occasionally. \u00a0Magazines published source code, which wasn&#8217;t always entirely accurate, and which you had to type in.<\/p>\n<p>All of these problems were surmountable, and they didn&#8217;t keep me from using it. \u00a0I learned quickly that you could only reuse a cassette tape a few times before it got too warped to save files. \u00a0The RAM pack problem was solved with a couple of well-placed rubber bands. \u00a0I got good at reading the magazine code and figuring out where they might have made a typo or a logical error. \u00a0There was also the machine&#8217;s propensity for overheating, which I solved by precariously balancing a glass of ice water on the top of the machine. \u00a0At least the keyboard was flat, so a spilled glass wouldn&#8217;t spell complete destruction.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder how much different my life would be if we hadn&#8217;t picked up that computer.<\/p>\n<div class='footnotes' id='footnotes-321'>\n<div class='footnotedivider'><\/div>\n<ol>\n<li id='fn-321-1'> I can&#8217;t tell you how hard that made me laugh. \u00a0The &#8220;that&#8217;s what she said&#8221; jokes just make themselves sometimes <span class='footnotereverse'><a href='#fnref-321-1'>&#8617;<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I remember my first computer. \u00a0It was a Timex-Sinclair 1000 (known as a ZX-81 overseas). \u00a0My dad bought it, and he and I learned about computers and programming together on it.
