{"id":207,"date":"2010-12-13T08:35:59","date_gmt":"2010-12-13T16:35:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/?p=207"},"modified":"2010-12-10T15:55:17","modified_gmt":"2010-12-10T23:55:17","slug":"corporate-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/13\/corporate-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"corporate culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Corporate culture is a sticky thing. \u00a0VMware, like many other companies, has a whole <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/company\/jobs\/culture.html\">page dedicated to its culture<\/a>. \u00a0But the official statements about corporate culture, such as VMware&#8217;s statement that we have a &#8220;culture of excellence&#8221;, don&#8217;t really do a lot to tell you about what the culture is really like.<\/p>\n<p>One piece of the culture that I&#8217;ve noticed is that everyone just uses first names to refer to executives and senior management. \u00a0If someone refers to Paul, they&#8217;re usually referring to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Maritz\">Paul Maritz<\/a>, our CEO. \u00a0But it&#8217;s said casually, making a newbie like me wondering if there&#8217;s a Paul on my team that I just haven&#8217;t met yet.<\/p>\n<p>This is quite different from Microsoft, where many people are referred to by their email address. \u00a0For example, if Steve Ballmer comes up in conversation, he&#8217;s called SteveB. \u00a0Even Bill Gates is called BillG. \u00a0It&#8217;s so ingrained in the culture that people will often sign their emails as &#8220;NadyneR&#8221;. \u00a0I know another ex-Microsoftie who&#8217;s said that she still trips up and signs her emails like that instead of just with her name.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;ll get used to just referring to everyone by only their first name instead of using a surname or at least an initial as a differentiator, but I&#8217;m not quite there yet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Corporate culture is a sticky thing. \u00a0VMware, like many other companies, has a whole page dedicated to its culture. \u00a0But the official statements about corporate culture, such as VMware&#8217;s statement that we have a &#8220;culture of excellence&#8221;, don&#8217;t really do a lot to tell you about what the culture is really like.
