{"id":176,"date":"2010-11-18T07:56:08","date_gmt":"2010-11-18T15:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/?p=176"},"modified":"2010-11-17T11:20:14","modified_gmt":"2010-11-17T19:20:14","slug":"acclimatizing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/2010\/11\/18\/acclimatizing\/","title":{"rendered":"acclimatizing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone, from friends to family to previous colleagues to new co-workers, asks me the same question: &#8220;how are you acclimatizing?&#8221; \u00a0Having been here for not even two weeks yet, I&#8217;m never entirely sure how to answer that question.<\/p>\n<p>So far, life is mostly about figuring my way around. \u00a0I&#8217;m learning about VMware&#8217;s extensive portfolio of applications, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/vsphere\/\">vSphere<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/vcloud\/\">vCloud<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;m learning more about the applications that I already knew, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B002Q72JB8\/littlebluewor-20\">Fusion<\/a>. \u00a0Part of learning is both about where the applications stand now, and what their roadmaps look like for the future. \u00a0While this part is time-consuming, it&#8217;s also pretty straightforward.<\/p>\n<p>Another pretty straightforward task is learning about the new cadence of my day and my week. \u00a0Humans are, after all, creatures of habit; all of my habits are now broken. \u00a0I haven&#8217;t yet figured out the best route to drive from my home to campus, although I have figured out the best train\/bus combination that gets me here in a half-hour. \u00a0Thursdays seem to be given over to team meetings, although Wednesdays are entirely meeting-free.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhat less straightforward is figuring out how everything fits together. \u00a0VMware is a company that has seen staggering growth in the past few years, so I&#8217;m probably not the only person trying to figure this out. \u00a0The company has grown in size (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/company\/jobs\/culture.html\">this page<\/a> says we&#8217;re currently at 8200 employees) and grown the number of applications. \u00a0Some of this growth is organic, some has come through acquisitions (such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/zimbra\/\">Zimbra<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Thus far, acclimatizing is about gathering information. \u00a0As a researcher, this comes naturally. \u00a0The more interesting question will be in six months, to see how much I understand this company and my place in it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone, from friends to family to previous colleagues to new co-workers, asks me the same question: &#8220;how are you acclimatizing?&#8221; \u00a0Having been here for not even two weeks yet, I&#8217;m never entirely sure how to answer that question.
