{"id":1024,"date":"2012-12-14T07:01:19","date_gmt":"2012-12-14T15:01:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/?p=1024"},"modified":"2012-12-11T20:20:45","modified_gmt":"2012-12-12T04:20:45","slug":"the-user-experience-of-the-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/2012\/12\/14\/the-user-experience-of-the-end\/","title":{"rendered":"the user experience of the end"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Silarek1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1029\" title=\"Silarek\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Silarek1.jpg\" alt=\"Silarek\" width=\"172\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a>I was introduced to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.glitch.com\/\">Glitch<\/a>, a beautiful MMO, a few weeks before it was announced that it would close. \u00a0Glitch was a lovely game with a fantastic user experience. \u00a0Tiny Speck, the company behind Glitch, got all of the details right. \u00a0The in-world experience was truly unique, imaginative, and beautiful. \u00a0And they did a great job with its interactivity, and even got keyboard interaction right. \u00a0Their visual language was gorgeous. \u00a0They did the best job that I&#8217;ve ever seen of integrating music into the experience. \u00a0But the game was also unsustainable: built on Flash, which brought even my brand-new MacBook Pro to a standstill sometimes, it just couldn&#8217;t deal with the number of players that it needed to be sustainable.<\/p>\n<p>And when they announced that they were closing, they again got all of the details right. \u00a0They offered options to those who subscribed: refund, let the company keep it, or donate to charity. \u00a0They continued to introduce new elements of gameplay, including new areas of the world. \u00a0They introduced what was possibly my favorite type of animal, the <a title=\"concept art for helikitties\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kukubee.com\/Glitch\/FlyingCat_states.png\">helikitty<\/a>. \u00a0There were quests that led up to the end of the world. \u00a0And in the last few hours of the game, they wrapped up everything very nicely, giving the staff and the players a nice way to say goodbye.<\/p>\n<p>Also importantly, they allowed the artists who contributed to the game to continue to grow on their art and let it out in the world. \u00a0Art director Brent Kobayashi sells <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/kukubee\">handmade Glitch pouches<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etsy.com\/shop\/meowza\">art prints<\/a> on Etsy. \u00a0Two Indiegogo projects appeared quickly: one for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiegogo.com\/glitch-soundtrack\/x\/365082\">music of Glitch<\/a>, another for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiegogo.com\/the-art-of-glitch\/x\/365082\">art of Glitch<\/a>. \u00a0Both hit their goals in under two hours.<\/p>\n<p>As PCWorld says, it was a <a title=\"This is how you shut down your MMO's servers for good: Glitch's graceful exit\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/2019337\/this-is-how-you-shut-down-your-mmos-servers-for-good-glitchs-graceful-exit.html\">graceful exit<\/a>. \u00a0I&#8217;m sad to see it go, but glad that I got to experience it. \u00a0Goodbye, Glitch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was introduced to Glitch, a beautiful MMO, a few weeks before it was announced that it would close. \u00a0Glitch was a lovely game with a fantastic user experience. \u00a0Tiny Speck, the company behind Glitch, got all of the details right. \u00a0The in-world experience was truly unique, imaginative, and beautiful. \u00a0And they did a great &hellip;
