{"id":1013,"date":"2012-11-19T07:08:27","date_gmt":"2012-11-19T15:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/?p=1013"},"modified":"2012-11-15T14:34:49","modified_gmt":"2012-11-15T22:34:49","slug":"user-experience-and-the-oatmeal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/19\/user-experience-and-the-oatmeal\/","title":{"rendered":"user experience and The Oatmeal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Oatmeal has a great comic about being <a title=\"Some thoughts and musings about making things for the web\" href=\"http:\/\/theoatmeal.com\/comics\/making_things\">making things for the web<\/a>. \u00a0It resonated with me, a lot of it applies to user experience too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inspiration isn&#8217;t something you can schedule, harness, or control.<\/strong> \u00a0It arrives when it arrives. \u00a0For designers, this means that you have to be prepared for inspiration to strike at any time; for researchers, this means that inspiration from design analysis arrives when it arrives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The seeds of inspiration arrive from unexpected sources, and these seeds might not come to fruition for quite some time.<\/strong> \u00a0You have to experience things, and this experience informs what you do in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ideas from others can spark new ideas in you.<\/strong> \u00a0Others will tell you what you should design or research. \u00a0Their ideas are worth listening to. \u00a0You might not follow through with their suggestion, but their idea can lead to you seeing something else more clearly, and thus doing an awesome design or completing some awesome research.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Idea generation is like a river.<\/strong> \u00a0New stuff comes in, old stuff flows out. \u00a0You&#8217;ve got to keep up-to-date on new user experiences and new research to keep your river flowing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There is such a thing as destructive feedback.<\/strong> \u00a0Not all feedback about user experience is created equal. \u00a0If you take it at face value, it can just be destructive. \u00a0In user experience, it&#8217;s your job to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nadynerichmond.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/31\/loaded-words-matter-so-listen-up\/\">tease out useful feedback from destructive feedback<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Oatmeal has a great comic about being making things for the web. \u00a0It resonated with me, a lot of it applies to user experience too.
